Approach
Throughout the design and restoration process, GSS architects and project officers have liaised with conservation officers to ensure the building can be restored to a high standard while retaining as many features as possible. When the building was first erected, single panes of glass and large boilers powered by coal were normal. As an example, the windows will look visually the same as the original but will have a much higher U-value (which is how thermal transmittance is measured). Air source heating will be used, and modern facilities such as Fibre to the premises will be installed.
Phases
The first phase of the building was to remove an abundance of asbestos and strip out parts of the broken fabric. Work then progressed to the roof to restore timbers and replace or retain tiles to make the building water tights. One main contractor started on site in October 2023 to complete the remainder of the work. This is due to be completed in Summer 2024.
